The downward spiral began in first grade, when teachers recognized learning difficulties in the young child. Then things went from bad to worse over the years, as the little girl struggled through elementary school and middle school, followed by two dismal years at Kingwood High School before finally transferring to the Houston Learning Academy, a private school, to get her high school diploma.
Strauss never dreamed she would reach her goal of becoming a teacher, but last week, she graduated with a teaching degree from the University of Houston Downtown. The 26-year-old Kingwood woman now plans on using her own experience as a former special education student for the betterment and success of future generations of children in the public school system.
